Why does it take so long for a company to call back with a job offer? Does it take that much to hire someone?
Question by cby: Why does it take so long for a company to call back with a job offer? Does it take that much to hire someone?
I have had a phone interview, group interview, a second interview, and I’ve been asked to spend the day working with the company to see if I’d like the job. In my opinion, I believe I have the job. Why else would they have taken me through this lengthy process if they aren’t going to hire me? After I worked with them for the day, they told me that they’d contact me very soon…it’s been a week and a half! When you’re waiting to hear life changing news that’s an eternity! Why are they taking so long? Or is this the typical amount of time that one should wait for a job offer?

Sometimes they need to know in advance if they can get enough employees to start up a new project. Personnel will start interviews and screening way ahead of any job openings. Its not fair to workers to waste time applying for jobs that don’t exist.

Did you spend the day with them? Did you like it? Did everyone seem content and busy?
The hiring process varies from company to company, I would say that if you went through all those steps, you pretty much have the job. Of course, it’s not official until you have a written offer. Some companies, especially if they are a big public company, have more red tape than others. A week and a half sounds average to me (for a big company).
