Question by dsjnix: what kind of things should we consider when assessing a job offer that involves relocating our family ?
My husband has been offered a great promotion, raise , and relocations package but it would mean moving our family, ( two teens) to another far away state. The job offers a salary that equals almost the amount that we are both currently making, but it seems like I would need to also consider that I would be giving up a great job where I work from my home about 75% of the time. I could move and not work as we are fine on the current income but then I have to consider my retirement benefits as well. How can we properly assess this job offer and make the best decision for our family? Any suggestions?

Sounds like alot of this question is going to be weighing your personal options and lifestyle, due to your position and being able to work from home. There is a great website called homefair.com that can compare salary vs cost of living in different areas to give a more realistic view on how good the opportunity is. On your retirement fund figure the amount you contribute and employer matches to the rate invested over the amount of years not working to see what your leaving on the table. Also consider his new retirement plan and possibly could negotiate the companys contribution to compensate for what you will be losing. I have seen employers make that difference up either in stock options, equity,an increase in their 401k match, or a one time sign on bonus. Hope that helps.

The teenagers might make this decision for you ha ha Best of luck to you and your family.
