What happens to your unemployment benefits if you move to another state?
I’ve been on unemployment for a while now and have just started drawing benefits on my 2nd extension. I’ve had no luck finding a job and am thinking about moving to a state with a better employment rate. Will I be able to collect the remainder of my claim if I leave California? Any input is greatly appreciated as I’ve tried dozens of times to contact the unemployment office and have had zero success with this.

You would need to file in the state that you move too. to do an interstate claim.
I am in almost the exact same situation. I called CA EDD and actually got through. The guy I spoke to sounded knowledgeable, and checked his answer with a supervisor. What he said was that all I needed to do was fill out the change of address on my claim form when I move, and my benefits (amount, duration) should not be affected.
From what I’ve read elsewhere, they will probably suspend your payments when you first move, and probably require a phone interview to ask why you moved, but from what the EDD guy told me, the move should not affect your benefits long-term. Hope this is accurate and helpful.
PS – You do, of course, have to continue to look for work in your new state.
Also, be aware that you will probably not receive benefits for the period in which you are actually moving and therefore not available to accept work.
