Kellogg’s Six-Hour Work Day

Robert Whaples, “Review of Benjamin Kline Hunnicutt, Kellogg’s Six-Hour Day.” EH.Net Economic History Services, Sep 11 1998. URL: eh.net March 2010, Bureau of Labor Statistics, Economic News Release www.bls.gov Study Shows Six-Hour Workday to be Optimal Although a recent Australian study suggests long workdays threaten employees’ well-being, personal ambitions and workplace competition among American workers make a shortened workday unlikely in the United States. By Barbara Worthington www.hreonline.com She (Dr. Caroline West of Sydney University) says nearly one-third of Australian full-time workers work more than 48 hours a week and 30 percent work 50 or more hours. “It’s going to require a lot of structural reform, but I think the time is ripe for addressing it as an issue,” West says of the proposed six-hour workday. “I don’t see any reason why it can’t realistically happen.” While it may or may not be realistic for Australia, such a workplace trend is unlikely to take hold in the United States. “We tend to work more hours than a lot of the industrialized world,” says Terry Beehr, professor of organizational psychology at Mount Pleasant, Mich.’s Central Michigan University. “I don’t see any trend going away from that.” Whats wrong with a 30-hour work week? By Don Fitz May 30, 2009 — With millions of jobs lost during the first part of 2009, who is calling for a shorter work week to spread the work around? Not the Republicans. Not even the Democrats. But why is there

Ghana Postal Workers – Work Music

Four postal workers use music to make the work of canceling stamps less boring. They were recorded at the University of Ghana post office in 1975 by James Koetting. Their song appears in the book/CD-Rom Worlds of Music: An Introduction to the Music of the World’s Peoples. Description from Bloggio Oddio: This is what you are hearing; the two men seated at the table slap a letter rhythmically several times to bring it from the file to the position on the table where it is to be canceled (this act makes a light-sounding thud). The marker is inked one or more times (the lowest, most resonant sound you hear) and then stamped on the letter (the high-pitched mechanized sound you hear). As you can hear, the rhythm produced is not a simple one-two-three (bring forward the letter – ink the marker – stamp the letter). Rather, musical sensitivities take over. Several slaps on the letter to bring it down, repeated thuds of the marker in the ink pad and multiple cancelations of single letters are done for rhythmic interest. Such repetition slows down the work, but also makes it much more interesting for the workers. The other sounds you hear have nothing to do with the work itself. A third man has a pair of scissors that he clicks – not cutting anything, but adding to the rhythm. The scissors go “click, click, click, rest” [...] a basic rhythm used in popular dance music. The fourth worker simply whistles along. He and any of the other three workers who care to join him whistle popular

Why do we hate going to work?

Work Sucks original video was by this guy: www.youtube.com Go to his channel to see the other two parts here is the original video: www.youtube.com YOUR DUTY TO PHONE IN SICK “Supply and demand” is a free-market cliché commonly spouted (but often misunderstood) by corporate leaders. “Demand” is defined in free-market theory as a demand made by a free, rational individual who is acting out of self-interest. But many “demands” — eg the demand for “status symbol” consumer goods — owe more to saturation advertising and social conformity than to rational, individual self-interest. And what about the “demand” for jobs in the labour market? When someone is forced by financial necessity to take a low-paid menial job, are they making a free, rational, self-interested demand? Are they saying: “As a free, rational individual, I hereby express my demand to work in a shit job for appalling wages”. Obviously they are not. In fact, most of our economic activities don’t appear to fit the free-market definition of rational, free, individual, self-interested demands. But there is one demand in our work-obsessed society that undoubtedly does appear rational, individual and self-interested — the demand for more leisure. In order for “supply and demand” to function properly, demands must be expressed and registered in the marketplace. Unfortunately, employees are usually too afraid to express their demand for more leisure. And if they do express this demand, it tends to go unregistered (eg

Why does deficit spending not work for helping the economy?

Question by : Why does deficit spending not work for helping the economy?
i have to make a speech on why Keynesian economics doesnt work. Keynesian advocates how govt. should always bail out the economy by spending lots of money if its not doing as well as it should be.

how can i disprove Keynesian economics and what are some reasons for why it doesn’t work??

I was thinking of attacking the massive debt keynesians creates with the deficit spending and the effect the debt might have on the economy or maybe how govt. spending might not make up for real consumer spending. are any of these even right?

Answer by Max Molyneux
In a free-market economy, each individual chooses the products or services which best meet his needs. He then buys those needs that will allow him to continue to provide the products and services he is best able to provide to other consumers. Any money he has left over is put in the bank, and others borrow that money to help them to provide goods and services through businesses. The entire system is based on merit. In Keynesian economics, the government manipulates the supply of money by taxing and spending. This takes money out of the merit-driven free market and puts it into the hands of politicians. While the money might have been kept by the individuals who earned the money to meet their needs, it will now go to enrich lobbyists/contractors who support specific politicians.
