British unemployed forced to do unpaid labour – or be made homeless!!!
A Birmingham graduate is taking legal action against the government over a scheme which forces unemployed people to do unpaid work. Cait Reilly had found voluntary work in the museum sector but she said her JobCentre Plus adviser told her she had to work for free at a Poundland store stacking shelves or lose her benefits. If she had refused she would have faced a mandatory 3 months cancellation of her benefits (including Housing benefit) which would have effectively made her homeless and destitute. This law is going to affect many thousands of unemployed people and families in the next few months. The social riots of last year are going to seem insignificant when compared to the riots that are going to occur this year as a result of this draconian legislation which is designed to destroy the welfare state Once again the poorest in our community will have to pay for the greed and crimes of the bankers and financial backers of the political parties. It’s time to fight back. It’s time to say NO!!

President Barack Obama chided Republicans again Monday for blocking a vote to extend unemployment benefits, saying the GOP must end the deficit hawkishness that has emerged as a campaign theme for the upcoming midterm elections.
“I know it’s getting close to an election, but there are times you put elections aside,” said Obama, speaking from the Rose Garden and standing beside three people who can’t find work and are about to lose their unemployment pay. “This is one of those times.”
“We need to pass it for all the Americans who haven’t been able to find work in an economy where there are five applicants for every opening, who need emergency relief to help them pay the rent and cover their utilities and put food on the table while they’re looking for another job,” he said. “And for a long time there’s been a tradition, under both Democratic and Republican presidents, to offer relief to the unemployed. That was certainly the case under my predecessor when Republican senators voted several times to extend emergency unemployment benefits.”
In recent weeks, Republicans have blocked three attempts to pass the extension of jobless benefits until November, saying that without a way to pay for it, it would simply add to the soaring national deficit. And Obama on Monday called out his opponents for “advancing a misguided notion” that additional aid discourages people from looking for a job.
“That attitude, I think, reflects a lack of faith in the American people,” he said.
The president stressed that emergency assistance goes hand in hand with his administration’s work to jump-start private-sector growth and get businesses hiring again. He urged Congress to help all the “honest, decent, hardworking folks who have fallen on hard times” through no fault of their own.
A CBS poll found that 52 percent of Americans wanted the jobless aid extended, even if it adds to the deficit.
Just four months ago, Sen. Jim Bunning (R-Ky.) launched an unpopular late-night filibuster to stop an extension of unemployment aid. His Republican colleagues pushed him to give up his lonely battle, and a bipartisan group of 78 senators approved the aid through March.

…as usual, Obama talking about “electioneering” is the height of hypocrisy…
…he is desperate to get this passed now because it guarantees him a huge campaign chip in 2012….if some new benefit package is passed after the 2010 midterms, then the Republicans can take partial credit for it regardless of how many seats they do or do not pick up….
…you guys are often giving yourself credit for your ability to “think outside the box”….well, look at Obama from an independent perspective….why is the November deadline such a big deal? Why is he focusing on unemployment benefits when he promised to the American People on TV that his “#1 focus” was going to be on jobs?
…look at what he’s NOT saying in addition to what he is saying….The Republicans might seem “dirty” but they are not the party in power…there’s a reason that new garden at the White House is growing so well….and it’s not because Michelle has such a green thumb….
