To whom do I owe state tax for Ohio unemployment compensation?

Question by reddog278: To whom do I owe state tax for Ohio unemployment compensation?
State of Ohio (Dept. of Job and Family Services) pays me unemployment compensation, but they don’t withhold state tax. I’m currently living (mailing address) in Virginia looking for a job. Who has claim to my taxes … Ohio or Virginia? Is the claim based on the income source or the residence?
@ Tax Chopper. Thanks for the reference … so, (according to the tax website you listed) the real question is “how long am I going to be a legal resident of Virginia?” If long enough for resident status, then the tax I owe to Ohio will count as a credit (form 760). If not, the taxable income percentage coming from Virginia sources will be 0% (form 763). Yes?
again @ Tax Chopper – looks like Virginia treats unemployment compensation as a “subtraction”. Yes?

If you get unemployment checks from OH, you must file OH return.Your Mailing address of VA will not exclude you from not filing tax return for OH unemployment.
File 1040 OH
Then file VA 760 PY (part year resident)
For your information, the first 2400 of the unemployment will be excluded by the software from any tax’s. If you file a paper return, exclude the first 2400 from tax.
Good luck

Question by ssa: Currently receiving PA unemployment compensation, what happens if I move out of state?
Currently receiving Pennsylvania unemployment compensation, if I move to New Jersey can I still receive PA unemployment benefits? All my work experience is from Pennsylvania. I may have to move in with family in NJ because of money issues. Anyone with experience in a situation like this? Thanks!!

Your unemployment benefits will still continue. When you know what your new address is -call the UE office and notify them. Your checks will be sent to the new address. You are still entitled to PA Unemployment until you get another job-even if its in another state or until your benefit term ends. If you are receiving a debt card where UE benefits are transfer biweekly to it –then nothing will change – but you still need to inform them of your new address incase they have to send you other types of notices pertaining to your unemployment status.

If I only had unemployment compensation for 2012, do I need to file anything with the state of California? Their Calfile says that they don’t tax it and they won’t let me continue filing online so I don’t know what, if anything, to send in.
I love the first answer. Which restated what I JUST said above. What I need to know is if I need to send ANYTHING into them.
