Question by Woody: The Australian Government are a bit slow on the uptake?
Next year they say unemployment will rise by the loss of 250,000 jobs.
They also think the jobless rate will peak in 2010 at 9%

Try at least double those manipulated numbers…fools!

Well, it depends how the unemployment criteria and rates are measured. The previous government kept our unemployment rate low by not counting unemployed people in training programs, work for the dole or underemployed people doing a few hours of shifts a week.

Maybe the current government will have to resort to also counting unemployed stay-at-home-mums (cos raising kids is a job, right?), volunteer workers and everyone who gets cut off Centrelink benefits at least once a year as “not technically unemployed” to maintain such optimistic figures.

What influences our spending during the slow economy?

Question by kay: What influences our spending during the slow economy?
How much can our spending create the multiplier effects on the economy? Do you think an increase in government’s spending (G) can boost the Aggregate Demand (AD) in the recession? Why have businesses left it to the consumer to carry the nation recently?

Best answer:

Answer by SDD
An increase in government spending cannot really increase aggregate demand unless you assume that the resources it takes out of the private sector are less productive than what the government spends on. Not usually the case.

Did Obama realize that his lie about Social Security checks not going out would slow down consumer spending?

Question by : Did Obama realize that his lie about Social Security checks not going out would slow down consumer spending?
This may backfire on the President, as many in this population are tightening their belts and saving any penny they can in case they don’t get their income in August. This is money that won’t make it into the economy this month, which might just be a few dollars from each, but it adds up. While these groups on this fixed income are not necessarily flamboyant spenders, you are still talking 70 million strong receiving these checks. Elizabeth Smith of Western Ma. said she is putting aside money from this months budget just in case next months money does not come in. While it isn’t much, the few dollars from Smith, added to many other seniors with this same thought, adds up to much less money going into an already strapped economy today.
