Slave labor in Thousand Oaks, California? Eww. What do you think?
Question by DAR: Slave labor in Thousand Oaks, California? Eww. What do you think?
“THOUSAND OAKS, Calif., Aug. 14 /PRNewswire/ — A class action lawsuit has been brought against a Thousand Oaks car wash operating in violation of California labor laws. The suit alleges that the owners of the Thousand Oaks Hand Wash hired undocumented workers and subjected them to slavery-like conditions, including forcing them to work for free for the first month and denying them overtime pay. If they stayed long enough to earn the right to be paid, they received well below minimum wage and they endured constant threats of deportation.”
The suit alleges that Hand Wash, which is located at 2725 Thousand Oaks Blvd., knowingly employs undocumented workers whose lack of English skills and fear of immigration services make them easily exploited.
Hand Wash allegedly refuses to pay its employees for up to as much as the first month, after which employment may be severed without compensation if Hand Wash is not satisfied with their performance.
The Complaint filed in Ventura County Superior Court, Simi Valley Division states that the named plaintiff was told that if he did a good job, he would then begin earning money at $ 5.00 per hour. This is well below both the current California minimum wage of $ 7.50 and the previous minimum wage of $ 6.25. The suit goes on to allege that Hand Wash required employees to report to work at 8:00 AM but they did not get paid until the first cars came in later in the morning. It also alleges that employees were forced to regularly work more than 10 hours per day, often times seven days per week, with no rest or lunch breaks or overtime pay.”
What I think is a) this is wrong. and b) is someone still arguing that illegal immigration doesn’t drive down wages?
El Chile, I agree that abusing them is wrong, but I think giving them green cards would send the wrong message. Due to their being here, those legally here weren’t hired at minimum wage, either.

yes, illegal immigrants are exploited big time when it comes to working. the employers know they are already walking on pins and needles so they threaten them and pay them dirt.

Should I talk to a lawyer or go through the Dept. of Labor?
Question by smallcola642: Should I talk to a lawyer or go through the Dept. of Labor?
I was employed through a temp service for contract-to-hire work at a call center. After 5 months of work (which was 2 months past the date they said I would be hired), I recieved a call one night saying the “assignment” had ended. Since then, it’s been a total run-around with the temp service. They won’t return my calls or emails; it took over a week to get my last paycheck, now they’re withholding my personal items. I’ve asked they mail them to me, but have not recieved any kind of acknowlegment of my request or my items, and no one’s returning my messages. Should I contact a lawyer or go through the department of labor?

As counter-intuitive as this sounds, go there and be an absolute angel to them. Even bring food with you to put in their office, something along the lines of fingerfood – people often use donuts or brownies. This is a psychological technique people use with laborers in order to get them to work harder. Police use it as a test in interrogation situations to see if a person is guilty or not. You see if someone takes something that is yours they feel like they owe you something. A guilty person won’t take a donut, and a person who does take a donut even when they’re innocent will feel like they owe something to the person who just gave them something nice. In other words, if you bring in food they’ll feel obligated to listen to you, not to mention you just did something nice for them, the whole mood will elevate. Be frank and ask as a side note whether or not they’ll be sending your stuff back to the temp agency itself or if they’d like you to go and get it personally, say that either would be find but it’s very important that you get it done urgently. And sit there as they call them. It’s going to be a major dramatization and you’ll behave as though they’re your best friends for this one time but I guarantee they’ll remember you and you will get what you want without trouble if you keep your mind and being friendly and giving. What you give you receive, it’s the natural balance of the universe, give the good you’d like to see in return and it won’t fail you.

Why is unemployment so high? Are the people hoarding their labor? are they being paid to?
Question by Yogi: Why is unemployment so high? Are the people hoarding their labor? are they being paid to?
Should we pay investors to hoard their money because investing sucks like the government is for Workers?
If workers can’t get much for working why don’t they just go out and fix and clean stuff and do community service for free? Why don’t they do dangerous stuff to risk their ASSets without getting paid for it like Obama expects investors to do with their assets?
If workers stopped hoarding wouldn’t it be much better for the economy?

Unemployment is so high because our government can’t get it’s act together and work in the best interest of the country. It’s no wonder investors and businesses don’t hire…too much uncertainty and our government is a direct cause of that uncertainty.

Has anyone here used a labor tub?
Question by Christy: Has anyone here used a labor tub?
I am 31 weeks pregnant. I was informed last night that the hospital that I plan to use has a labor tub. I would not be allowed to deliver in the tub for a water birth. It’s a first come first serve basis on delivery day. There doesn’t seem to be an extra charge for this service. What are the pros and cons?
Best answer:
Answer by Rosalyn N
Interesting that they would let you labor in the tub but not deliver. I have several friends who have used labor tubs for labor and delivery and were very happy. It’s restful, there’s not as much gravity, you stay warm during labor, the baby has a smoother transition from womb to air, the slight pressure of the water assists the contractions.
I don’t know of any negatives, unless it’s answering questions from friends and relatives who think a labor tub is weird.
I would imagine that it would be tough getting out of the tub just before delivering though!
