Daily Forex News Recap (12/30): Trio of Good US Data to End 2010, But USD Pressured

www.fxtimes.com Summary We end the year with upbeat economic reports from the US on manufacturing, home sales and unemployment claims. While that helped the USD stem a sell-off vs the Yen, the USD remained pressured to end 2010, hitting record lows against the Swiss Franc and Australian Dollars. Let’s first start by taking a look at the data from today. Jobless Claims at 2 and a Half Year Low Initial jobless claims fell by 34K, down to 388K for the week ended December 25th. That’s the lowest level in nearly two-and-a-half years, and gives us an indication that the labor market is improving. There has been a pretty steady downtrend in jobless claims in the 4th quarter, after they have been moving sideways through the rest of 2010. A level below 400K could be consistent with an increase of 100K-150K non-farm payrolls per month. Such a pace would need to be kept up in order to try and shift the unemployment rate down. The focus on the December Non-Farm Payroll report on January 7th increases now. Chicago Business Barometer Hits 22-Year High Following the weekly jobless claims, which came out at 8:30AM ET, was the Chicago Business Barometer (formerly known as the Chicago PMI) at 9:45AM. The reading for the business index was a blow-out, soaring in December to 68.6 from 62.5. That’s the highest reading in 22 years and bodes well for the upcoming ISM Manufacturing and Services PMI reports next week. It was a much stronger than expected reading. Forecasts had called for a small

GGN- Unemployment Rises in 30 States in January 2010

PLEASE SUBSCRIBE!!!!! news.yahoo.com WASHINGTON Unemployment rose in 30 states in January, the Labor Department said Wednesday, evidence that jobs remain scarce in most regions of the country. The data is somewhat better than December, when 43 states reported higher unemployment rates, but worse than November, when rates fell in most states. Still, five states reported record-high joblessness in January: California, at 12.5 percent; South Carolina, 12.6 percent; Florida, 11.9 percent; North Carolina, 11.1 percent; and Georgia, 10.4 percent. Michigan’s unemployment rate is still the nation’s highest, at 14.3 percent, followed by Nevada, with 13 percent and Rhode Island at 12.7 percent. South Carolina and California round out the top five. There were some signs of job creation. Thirty-one states added jobs in January, up from only 11 in the previous month. But the job gains weren’t enough, in many cases, to lower the unemployment rate. For example, California reported the largest job gains, of 32500, though its unemployment rate also rose. Illinois, New York, Washington state and Minnesota reported the next highest totals of new jobs. Thank you everyone for subscribing!
