Should I tell one company that I am interview with about another company’s job offer?

Question by Matt: Should I tell one company that I am interview with about another company’s job offer?
I have a job offer from a company that is actually my second choice. I have a third interview with the company that is my first choice later this week.

My question is should I tell the first choice company that I have an offer on the table from my second choice company? I have tried this tactic in the past and it failed! But I thought what the world thought?

Any input is helpful. Thanks!
Thank you for the feedback! It is nice to have people to bounce ideas off of! Thank you and I will not be mentioning the other job offer.

I don’t think that you should tell them unless you are asked. For example: If they open the door regarding whether you are interviewing elsewhere then I would mention it. Personally, I would only use this when negotiating over salary should you be offered the job but you consider the salary to be substandard. Then I would mention the other offer if it has a bearing on the salary requirements.

No! Keep it quiet. Wait and see who offers you a job. If you get the one you want, then fine. If you don’t you might get the other one. But I would not mention it.

Never let out more than you need to. As a new hire, you will have little bargaining power. You stand to gain nothing by telling a prospective employer this other than irritate them by trying to force a move. If you rub them the wrong way, especially in this economy, they will pull the next of hundreds of applicants they have.

No. That will not make them move your interview sooner or offer you a job quicker. There are lots of other candidates to interview who aren’t trying to rush them by saying they have some other job that wants them
