Are you talking about Americans?If so, the answer is YES. In developing countries, consumer spending is higher. 80% or 90% is a norm. But in some developed countries like Japan and Germany, the spending is more lower.

    70% is the ratio of consumer spending and GDP

    there are criticism why GDP might not represent the entire economy (housekeeping, black market, unregistered cash transactions), but there is no objective and easy-to-compute measure that incorporates those.
