In your opinion, is there anything wrong with a physician making a profit for the services he provides?

……Physicians bust their cans in medical school, internship, and residency. Seems like they should make some money on the fruits of their labor just like everyone else in this country.

  • HEAD M&M IN CHARGE:

no there are two reason to go to medical school one and first is that you care about people two of course is the money you will make

  • ♥BETH♥:

Not at all. The problem is with the insurance companies and everyone else outside the medical profession who makes big buck off your illnesses.

  • Willis Jeffords:

Are you kidding? You ask this as though it’s a free country. You should run this question by the compensation czar first.

    lol

  • WereTurtle:

There is nothing wrong with it. Unless of course you are a marxist – in that case, all profits are evil.

  • boodreauxthecoonass:

Nothing whatsoever. Anyone that disagrees is obviously willing to work for free themselves. If not, they are a blatant hypocrite.

  • Brian:

No and considering the the time and money spent in training a very healthy profit would be in order..

BTW the insurance companies make no money off of anyone’s illness, that actually costs them money..

  • Why Don't People Like Me? 2:

No. It’s the American way…Can someone remind liberals what that is?

  • Culture Warrior:

Your everyday, personal physician will make more money with universal health care. They will have more patients who will be able to see them more frequently. Some specialists will lose money, however.

The more I read Y!A the more I realize many of you don’t quite understand what universal healthcare would entail. No one does, as proposals are still being worked on. Why don’t you wait for the specifics instead of catastrophizing?

  • Quickie D:

Only Liberals think they deserve the best for free.

  • old man on the hill:

in your opinion is there any reason why the average working can just barely afford health insurance? and many that have it are considering giving it so that can afford certain necessities such as a roof over their head and food on the table

of course a doctor should be able to make money. every one who works for a living should be able to make money. what good is making the money if a majority of people can’t afford the price. i am quite sure most doctors aren’t in it just for the money. many of them thought they would be able to help people

  • Loyalist Cannons:

Yes, because then he is essentially relying on the pain and suffering on others for income.
Here in Canada, doctors are paid a steady income by the government. If we need to go to the doctor for something, we either just slip into the clinic, or we book an appointment. No bills, no fees, nothing. As long as you pay your taxes, you get healthcare.

  • Dante:

No they are one of the highest skilled jobs and should be paid accordingly

  • skonch01:

And people think they have a hard time finding a primary care physician now…just wait until socialized medicine sets in

  • Nathan:

A qualified doctor should make a decent profit.

A motorcycle mechanic started talking to a doctor in line at the bank. The mechanic said, “Our jobs are a lot alike. We both fix closed systems and help them run better. Me rebuilding a carburetor is like you placing a shunt in a heart.” The doctor said, “No. It’s nothing alike” The mechanic said, “Of course it is. We both repair mechanical systems, yours is just a body and mine is a motorcycle.” The doctor said, “Try doing all of your repairs while the bike is running.”

  • Half-pint:

I’m not sure if anyone wants physicians to make less money. The aim is to reform the insurance industry so that people are not rejected or dropped because of preexisting conditions and to avoid other problems. Did you also know that many doctors and med students are actually in favor of some form of universal health care?

  • stingray:

no doctors should be purely altruistic and not interested in profit
enough to cover their expense and to make a living. but not make ridiculous amount of income

  • John's Boehner:

    Nope.

  • cardimom:

Before that is there anything wrong with a physician making enough to pay his/her student loan, office rent, malpractice insurance, staff salaries, regular bills, licensing fees, mandatory continuing education? How much profit do you really think is left after that? Even if the doctor is “Hired” by the practice, or works as a locum, the cost to be doctor is quite significant. or any other health care professional.

  • Steve K:

Let him charge what ever he wants. If he is to high, he will run out of patients. Just don’t force him to treat those stinking filthy illegal aliens.

  • Mr. Bad Day:

    Physicians should make money.

But they do. And physicians in other countries, where there are various levels of National Healthcare, make money as well.

If there’s a politically stable country where the physicians aren’t financially secure, I don’t know where it is.

  • mayna_smo_mry:

no. they are at risk all the time and have to pay big money for mal practice insurance. Plus they worked hard for at least 8 years to get to be drs. they have to go to seminars constantly to keep up with new medicines and new treatments and the everyday stress of diagnosing the problems of their patients. you don;t think twice about spending 30 -40 bucks for a movie but are not willing to pay 60 to get treated when your sick or hurt.
Most cases insurances pays for part of your visit.
so no I see nothing wrong with it.

  • impaler19120:

Well Mr> Flags of Our fathers, you have a good point. And, unfortunately some of the niwits who answered you don’t have a physician in the family, so they have little or no appreciation for how hard they work, or how much they pay in insurance just to stay in business. Their profit margin is much lower than most other skilled professions (like our pals, the Trial lawyers).

And, I really like the comment from the canadian dude, Yeah, they don’t pay anything, but they wait MONTHS for simple elective procedures (and the government gets to decide what is an elective procedure, not physicians). Most of us US folks bitch and moan about how badly our HMOs treat us. They have no idea how much WORSE the Canadian socialized medicine system treats people.

The real problem with health care in this country is not how much money Doctors make, it is how much money the LAWYERS make, and how much Corporate executives (non-physicians) make who run hospitals.

My grand children are supported by a good, hard working physician, so I don’t need to hear crap from people who don’t appreciate how hard that life is. YOU ARE RIGHT Mr. Flags. Work hard, charge a fair price and earn as much as you can. It is the American way. Too may liberal wusses want money for nothing. I think they call it “Socialism”?

  • Lord Barrack O-Vader:

    No- Profit is good.
Excellence is a byproduct of profit.
I see they will not touch tort reform- have to protect their base.Kinda like the UAW and GM.
    What corruption!

  • TnT:

Do you think Senator Ted Kennedy was treated by a cut rate Doctor or a high priced one?

  • Edg1:

Of course not. If I had to spend all day EVERY day with my finger up some old coot’s butt, I darn sure would want to get seriously well paid.

  • Paul Grass:

No sir they have earned it,many have big student loans to repay and they provide a valued service they deserve the money they make.

  • legal doesn't make it right.:

No, there’s nothing wrong with it at all. But, liberals seem to think so because they want everything to be free, infact they don’t want to have to pay for anything. Instead we pay for it all.

  • Civic Cat:

Not at all–just so long as the market is de-oligopolized.
