If a labor union strikes, and the company responds by outsourcing those jobs, then what good is the union?

Question by Drunk Teddy’s Ghost: If a labor union strikes, and the company responds by outsourcing those jobs, then what good is the union?
Could there be any organization more short sited than a labor union?

Public employee unions are bankrupting municipalities all over America, this will result in layoffs, defaults, reduced services, and the leads to a downward spiral of quality of life in America.

What is the point of a union?

It is SUPPOSED to ensure jobs and fair treatment but the truth is, unions in this country have a rather dirty and underhanded history.

Unions have their place, however they have lost their way and become political organizations. They should be heavily regulated as by their very nature destroy a company as well as a country when allowed to participate in politics.

  • NPR NEWWS:

Unions give businesses two options: move elsewhere, or produce with low efficiency at $ 70/hr per unskilled worker.

No wonder we lost 35,000 manufacturing jobs last month. And our deficit is the biggest in history while we’re all MUCH poorer.

It seems to be what the unions and the democrats want to happen since they keep doing it.

    Before we had unions,

people were forced to work 14 hour days at 50 cents per hour.

Now what’s the point of a union TODAY?

    Simply put: To create jobs.

    With a 9.6% unemployment rate,
let’s have people work for the union so that there will be less people unemployed.

It nearly happened to Los Angeles. The ciy was a week from going bankrupt but somehow they found some money to say they were alright. With all the “slush” funds that governments have locally and federally, I sometimes wonder why these hack political bastards don’t stop lying to citizens and just delve into thier little cash stash before resorting to the more stupid tactics of increasing taxes.
LA is known for lying to its citizens and raising taxes. They lie to pass initiatives like Measure S (the phone tax) and do all they can to screw residents.
Yet with a real unemployment rate of some 18% in the state, they haven’t considered laying off city workers until just recently. And only in meager measures.

Unions are no longer of any real value and as you stated they have forced more businesses out of the US than any other reason.

  • Jimmbbo:

Unions had a place in improving conditions and safety, but have killed the golden goose by overplaying their advantage by forcing irrational work rules and wages on employers who cannot afford strikes, so bend over to remain competitive.

A union serves employees better as a THREAT than if it is voted in – for proof, look at Greece and California.

Union leaders have become MORE corrupt than the politicians they bribe and threaten.

I haven’t been a member of a labor union since I retired from the Teamsters.

But what we would and did do was to make sure that your shipments did not leave your warehouse.
And the few that did would not be on time.
Can’t outsource a truck driver is they are all unionized.

Unions is good at busing in homeless people, giving them a free T-shirt and holding protests and rallies.

Yeah your right. If we just followed the private sectors lead and paid everyone $ 8 an hour, we would have a better America……..

You should be asking why our government considers it more important to send jobs overseas than to build a solid middle class that is the lifeblood of the country. Why do we tolerate the bankrupting of the average worker so a few executives can make big bucks. Seems odd that America would be all for enriching other countries, while our middle class is stagnating and our poverty levels rising.

Unions are not responsible for the financial shortsightedness of politicians. What is the point of a highly paid administrator who can’t manage a budget?

Funny how you think the most important person is the person at the top. Local governments need to trim bureaucrats, not workers. Public employees, like police and firemen are the ones out there putting their lives on the line. The bureaucrats sit in comfy offices and talk about ways to spend money. Getting rid of a few bureaucrats doesn’t hurt services. Getting rid of police and fire, you may not notice until your house burns down.

Who do you want to see getting a decent pay and being there when you need them? The city council president, or the fireman.

It is really pathetic how the right wing has managed to convince so many people that the problems we face are because of the average worker, and yet they think the folks at the top need to be protected.

Added: My sister works for department of labor. Her job is to investigate union corruption, which she does vigorously. Corruption in unions is decreasing, and believe me, union leaders that are corrupt get hefty jail sentences and heavy fines when they are discovered. To start an investigation of your union leaders only takes a single call to department of labor.

You have linked unions to outsourcing. This is not true. First and foremost the correct term is ‘off shoring’ as outsourcing can happen anywhere, even right next door.
Second, most operations sent overseas have not been union operations. The reason? Many union operations cannot be sent over seas, that is how trade protectionism can work. The reason jobs go overseas is shareholder greed. Not worker greed.

don’t worry. if your ilk gets there way, labor unions will make a comeback in a HUGE way to fight against the misery your kind will heap upon the backs of the working class….

and when THAT happens, it’ll be like the old days:

“how many teamsters does it take to screw in a light bulb?”

“42. you gotta problem wit dat?”
