how can i or should i try to negotiate a job offer?
Question by dsjnix: how can i or should i try to negotiate a job offer?
I was offered a promotion that would involve moving to another state and relocating my family. My boss has said that this will be a great stepping stone for me and that i am the man he wants in the position. However, I currently make $ 55,000 and have a company car. The offer is to take a promotion and move to another state is for $ 75,000 with no company car. In terms of losing the company car, this would amount to only about a $ 10,000 a year raise to make this huge move. To me that seems unreasonable. My wife would be giving up a $ 75,000 a year job for us to even accept the offer (and she is in a profession where this is way more than she could make elsewhere . ) That would just not make sense financially for us to do. My question is how do I , or should I go back with a counter proposal that would make this work for my family, or do I just decline the offer. Lastly, whether it is a proposal (negotiation) or a declination of the position, should I put it in writing?

Not every offer for a promotion actually ‘promotes’ your life. You have a family and it’s your responsibility to make good judgement decisions on their behalf.
Not necessary to put it in writing if you see your boss face-to-face regularly. Sit down with him, discuss your pros and cons with him and tell him you really appreciate the offer and his confidence in you, but the move just wouldn’t be advantageous to you and your family.
