Obama to get Congress to approve an economic stimulus plan that would extend jobless benefits, send food aid to the poor, dispatch Medicaid funds to states and spend tens of billions of dollars on public works projects.

Spend and spend and spend and spend awayyyyyyyyyy….

Well yeah because Obama has always seemed very confident in the way he does things. He knows what he’s doing trust me. It’s the only way our economy can get better. There’s no other way to solve it. Obama is the man for the job.

  • Carpe diem:

Who doubled the national debt and deficit. Did you whine at him at all?

  • Princess83:

This is a way to keep every every one healthy and fed in order to work, you can’t send a starving family to work, it’s the kind hearted thing to do, alot of people are suffering and you should be ashamed of your self for being so greedy, you must have been born with a silver spoon in your mouth. nothing wrong with getting things back on track.

  • C.J.:

That is one, only one, of the reasons I did not vote for him. Just wait, it will get worse.

  • skipper60606:

Yes, the government has to spend to get the economy going again. I hope Obama goes through with a massive public works and infrastructure rebuilding program. It will put more people to work, and get consumers spending more which will be good for everyone. That’s what helped get us out of the Great Depression.

With the highest debt from spending in US history, I’d question more spending that wasn’t put into programs for creating more jobs and hence bringing in more tax revenue.

However, investing in education keeps US competitive so we can be leaders in science and technology
Investing in infrastructure permits not only job creation but more efficient trade
Investing in energy helps us become more fuel efficient and dependent

These are longer term goals, with the short term spending leading to long term growth.
As a business owner, not the lazy unemployed like many like to portray democrats, I completely understand investment where it will permit long term financial growth. This is very very different from the wasteful spending of the Bush administration, IMO.

  • Proud of America's stance:

I guess, from the Repukes side of it, it’s better to spend $ 10 billion per month in Iraq but don’t spend money in our own country for projects that put people to work.

The problem with government welfare is there is no accountability. A person gets free things; money, food, health care, without any accountability that they will pay it back once they get back on their feet, work it off if they haven’t gotten back on their feet (making welfare recipients volunteer), etc.

The only thing these programs spread is slothfulness in society, not an opportunity to get back on your feet. I also believe that a person is entitled to keep the wealth that he has earned, not the concept of “spreading the wealth” socialism.

And by the way, I am a poor college student who lives alone under the poverty level not asking for government assistance. It is doable!! (If you believe in self worth and responsibility)

  • Christine:

the basis of economic stimulus is to spend to get the economy moving. Its called Keynesian economic theory.

If Obama did not implement these actions the US economy would shrink further, as the poor would have even less to spend, causing small local business’s to close, meaning more unemployment, leading to ever more poor. The poor would become marginalised, crime would rise, the middle classes would end up paying for everything, to keep the country running (like police, army, health care workers, fire dept etc etc etc, )

the problem is most of what Obama seems to be trying to achieve has longer term intangible benefits, which is easy to knock down when your only looking at short term results.

You should be glad you have a leader thats trying to make your country better for everyone, not just the extremly wealthy.

Most economist agree that our economy is in danger of crashing and burning which is why there was 700 billion bailout of the banks. Even it that works we may still have a deep recession and the standard government response to a recession is to increase the deficit to stimulate the economy. Republicans prefer to cut taxes that increases the deficit and the Democrat prefer spending programs aimed at those that lose jobs, but no one favors balancing the budget during recessions. Our debt is growing out of control because for the last 30 years we have also run deficits when the economy was not in recession.
