Question by Ayana Shumate: At 40 no college backround and jobless, I come to the decision to enter college.?
Where is there more money in the state of NJ in a teaching degree or doing Public Administration/Social Work? I need to raise a preteen and get her ready for college. I need good pay, broadness, creativity, and good benefits and stabitlity.

Social work is the lowest paying college major there is. Try teaching instead, or if you are interested in anything medical, nursing and med /surgical/ radiology tech jobs pay pretty well for a lot shorter time in school.

In Canada, teacher is one of the lowest paying jobs but once you get one it is stable. Social work is also not really in demand where I am from, there are way too many teachers and social workers and not enough positions available.

Nursing might be a good option as well. You get paid better than a teacher/social worker and have good benefits. My mom was a nurse and a single mom. Although it was hard when I was youner (b/c nurses don’t have regular shifts fro 9-5pm, also have evening shifts), the pay was enough for us. She made minimum 60k. Now she makes 100k as a nurse manager.

Determine which career is in more demand in your area. Teachers college is only a year but some social work programs are 1.5 or 2 years where I’m from.

    Good luck.

The medical field might be your best bet actually.

Given what I’ve heard and the other answers to this question, I’d say at least start with teaching and avoid social work. If you are in a good public school in NJ you can make decent money and I know there’s teachers who stay with it for a long time. As for health, maybe that’s something you want to do when you feel your daughter is responsible to stay home on her own given the weird hours, but as mentioned above, good pay.

Get your MRS degree. Seriously, for your daughter’s sake…

A diploma in welding is a good second choice.
