GOP Blocks Jobless Benefits Bill For the second time in a month, a Republican lawmaker has singlehandedly blocked a vote on a stopgap jobless benefits bill. With Congress in recess for two weeks, this could mean that on April 5 a host of popular provisions could expire, including unemployment insurance and COBRA benefits for the jobless. Oklahoma Senator Tom Coburn blocked the measure last night. Republican Senator Jim Bunning of Kentucky blocked passage of a similar extension in February.

The official US unemployment rate now stands at 9.4 percent. The economy has lost more than 6 million jobs in the current recession. As bad as those numbers are, a new report from the New America Foundation finds that unemployment is more severe than reported by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. And even as optimistic commentators have seized upon the “green shoots” of recent stock market gains and slowing rates of job loss, the report warns that the US economy is headed toward a “jobless recovery” that could perpetuate the banking and housing crises. Senator Sherrod Brown (D-OH) will join Leo Hindery, Jr., Chairman of the Smart Globalization Initiative at the New America Foundation, to discuss the jobless recovery, its threat to our long-term economic health, and potential solutions.
